What Wedding Hairstylists Wish Brides Knew Before the Big Day

Hey there — I’m Maria, owner of Colorado Bridal Hair Co., and I’ve been helping Colorado brides feel like their best selves for over 10 years. As a wedding hairstylist, I’ve pinned, curled, braided, and secured countless buns in every kind of weather Colorado can throw at us.

But over the years, I’ve realized something: most brides don’t know what to expect when it comes to their wedding hair. And that’s not their fault! It’s just not something people talk about until it’s suddenly the thing you need to get right.

So, I wanted to share a few honest insights, not tips you’ll find on Pinterest or in a wedding mag, but real talk from someone who’s been behind the chair (and in hotel rooms, cabins, and mountaintops!) with hundreds of brides.

1. You Don’t Need to Know Exactly What You Want — But Bring Something

One of the biggest worries I hear during hair trials is: “I’m not totally sure what I want. Is that bad?” Not at all!

But showing up with no ideas at all? That’s tough for both of us.

As wedding hairstylists, we’re creative by nature, but we’re not mind readers. Bring some photos — not necessarily of styles you want to copy exactly, but ones that show what you like. Is it the soft waves? The volume? The undone texture?

It gives us a starting point. From there, we can tailor something perfect for your hair type, face shape, dress neckline, and overall vibe.

2. Hair Trials Are Not Just “Practice” — They’re Strategy Sessions

This isn’t just a warm-up round. The trial is where we learn:

  • How your hair reacts to different products
  • How long curls will hold
  • How your style will look with your accessories (veil, combs, flowers, etc.)

Think of it like a wedding-day blueprint. I take notes, snap reference photos, and build a product plan so on your big day, it’s not “Let’s see how this goes…” It’s “Let’s recreate what we already know works.”

Pro tip: Do your trial when you have a reason to get dressed up — maybe your bridal shower or engagement shoot. It’s a great way to feel out the style in real life.

3. Prep Matters More Than You Think

If your hair is super soft, slippery, or weighed down with product, that dreamy updo you want might not stay put.

That’s why wedding hairstylists like me send out prep instructions in advance. Usually, it’s:

  • Wash and fully dry your hair the night before
  • Avoid heavy conditioners or oils
  • Come with dry, detangled hair (we don’t do blowouts unless it’s part of your package)

Following prep instructions = better results + more styling time + less stress for you.

4. Weather and Hair Are Frenemies — Let’s Be Realistic

We live in Colorado, which means high altitude, dry air, humidity swings, and occasional mountain wind gusts.

Some styles hold up better than others. Want loose, boho waves with delicate pieces hanging down? Gorgeous — but if your ceremony is outdoors on a windy summit, we’ll need a backup plan.

I’ll always tell you honestly how a style will hold, and what adjustments we can make to keep your look intact for hours of hugs, dancing, and happy tears.

5. The Morning Should Feel Like a Vibe, Not a Rush

Hair and makeup set the tone for your whole wedding day.

So many brides tell me afterward that our time together getting ready with friends, having coffee, playing music, and feeling pampered was one of their favorite parts of the day.

I always build a detailed hair timeline, so we stay on track without feeling rushed. Your calm energy starts here. And it’s my job to protect it.

Final Thought: Hire the Human, Not Just the Style

You’re going to spend your wedding morning with your hairstylist up close and personal. Choose someone who listens, communicates clearly, and makes you feel supported.

The photos will last forever. But so will the memory of how you felt while getting ready.

If you’re looking for a wedding hairstylist in Colorado who cares just as much about that I’d love to chat. Whether it’s an intimate mountain elopement or a full-glam hotel suite moment, I’m here for it.
